Up to 20 Tons of Used Tires Removed from Tabakhmela by Tegeta Green Planet
Tegeta Green Planet continues its environmental activities. This time, the company’s team removed a large amount of abandoned tire waste from the Tabakhmela area.
As part of a large-scale environmental initiative, up to 20 tons of used tires were collected from the site. The problematic area was identified by the Tegeta Green Planet team, after which the initiative was coordinated with the relevant authorities. The company also ensured the logistical arrangements for the clean-up works. The operation was carried out over several days.
“Uncontrolled tire waste is one of the most problematic types of waste for the environment, both because of the risk of fire and because tires take a very long time to decompose. In the event of a fire, a large area can be damaged, while improper storage and overheating can cause tires to release various harmful gases. In addition, when waste is not managed in a controlled manner, it is difficult to determine how it will ultimately be used and whether, for example, it could be burned.
For us, as an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) organization, it is important to prevent this type of waste from harming the environment and to ensure that it is managed in accordance with the relevant regulations. The tires removed from Tabakhmela were transferred to our partner company, RECSOL, a tire recycling facility associated with Tegeta Holding, whose construction is currently underway.
At the next stage, starting from mid-October, this waste will be recycled in Georgia. The process will produce rubber powder, which can be used as an additive in modified asphalt. Rubber-modified asphalt is already widely used in road construction in European countries,” said Shalva Akhvlediani, Director of Tegeta Green Planet.
Tegeta Green Planet regularly carries out similar environmental initiatives in different regions of Georgia. Large-scale clean-up operations have already been conducted on the Tbilisi bypass road, in Bakuriani, and in Giorgitsminda. As a result of these activities, the company has prevented up to 120 tons of used tires from remaining in the environment.
Tegeta Green Planet is an Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) organization authorized to manage three types of automotive waste: used batteries and accumulators, tires, and waste oils. The company works to promote the principles of a circular economy in Georgia.
Extended Producer Responsibility is an approach established in European practice that places responsibility on producers for managing the waste generated after their products are used. In Georgia, the system was introduced in line with the country’s commitments under the European integration process.
Tegeta Green Planet plans to continue implementing environmental initiatives in the future to reduce the environmental impact of accumulated automotive waste across different areas of Georgia and ensure that it is managed in accordance with circular economy principles.
