Packaging Waste Management and the Need for Technical Regulation: A Business Perspective

On October 6, a meeting was held within the Circular Economy Action Platform of the UN Global Compact Network Georgia, focusing on the topic: “Packaging Waste Management and the Need for Technical Regulation: A Business Perspective.”

The main objective of the meeting was to discuss the challenges related to packaging waste management, existing practices, and the need for regulation from a business perspective. Participants discussed the importance of developing an effective system both for achieving environmental objectives and for creating a clear and predictable environment for businesses.

Shalva Akhvlediani, Director of Tegeta Green Planet, participated in the discussion and shared Tegeta Green Planet’s vision and practical experience with the audience. The discussion covered the importance of the Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) system, the role of businesses in waste management, and the practical challenges related to the development of a circular economy in Georgia.

As an EPR organization, Tegeta Green Planet works to support producers and importers in fulfilling their environmental obligations while contributing to the development of an effective waste management chain — from waste collection and proper treatment to its transformation into a resource.

Shalva Akhvlediani also shared Tegeta Green Planet’s experience in managing used tires, waste oils, and automotive batteries. He emphasized that building a sustainable system requires coordinated cooperation among businesses, government, and other stakeholders, while also taking practical experience into account.

The meeting also highlighted the importance of technical regulation and discussed how clear requirements and effective enforcement mechanisms can contribute to the development of the waste management system, strengthen responsible business practices, and promote more efficient use of resources.

For Tegeta Green Planet, the development of a circular economy is one of its key areas of focus. The company continues to cooperate with the business, public, and educational sectors and share its experience to ensure that waste management goes beyond simply fulfilling regulatory obligations and contributes to developing opportunities for the reuse and recycling of resources.
